First Case of HPMV Virus Reported in Bengaluru: 8-Month-Old Baby Infected

The first case of Human Parainfluenza Virus (HPMV) has been reported in India, with an 8-month-old male infant in Bengaluru testing positive. The child, admitted to Baptist Hospital on January 3, 2025, with a history of bronchopneumonia, was diagnosed with HPMV after laboratory tests. The infant is now showing signs of recovery under close medical supervision.

The Union Health Ministry confirmed the case in a statement, emphasizing that they are monitoring the situation through all available surveillance channels. “ICMR will continue to track trends in HPMV circulation throughout the year. The World Health Organization (WHO) is already providing timely updates regarding the situation in China to further inform ongoing measures,” the Ministry stated.

Health officials convened a joint monitoring group meeting on Saturday to address reports of rising respiratory illnesses in China and assess domestic preparedness. The Ministry assured the public that India’s surveillance mechanisms have not indicated any unusual surge in respiratory infections.

HPMV primarily affects the respiratory system, causing symptoms such as fever, cough, and breathing difficulties, particularly in young children. With health authorities focused on containment and prevention, this case underscores the importance of vigilance and proactive public health measures to manage emerging threats.
